Learning to Trust Yourself Again in Midlife

Updated: Aug 15

Why Listening to Your Inner Voice May Be the Greatest Gift You Give Yourself

“Finding peace is one thing. Trusting yourself enough to protect that peace is another.”

In my previous blog, Finding Peace in Midlife, I promised to explore why learning to trust yourself again can feel both liberating and uncomfortable after years of seeking others' approval.

For many of us, finding peace is only the beginning.

The deeper transformation begins when we trust ourselves enough to live from that place of peace.

For much of my life, I believed someone else probably knew better than I did.

I sought reassurance before making important decisions. I valued other people’s opinions more highly than my own. Like many people, I had gradually learned to measure my worth through approval, achievement and meeting expectations.

I didn’t realise it then, but somewhere along the way I had stopped trusting the inner wisdom that had consistently lived in me.

Looking back now, I understand why.

When Approval Becomes Our Compass

Very few of us begin life doubting ourselves.

As children, we naturally express who we are. We laugh freely, ask endless questions and trust our instincts without hesitation.

Then life begins to shape us.

Perhaps we learn that love feels conditional.

Perhaps we become the responsible one, the peacemaker, the achiever or the one who never asks for help.

Slowly and almost unnoticed, we begin looking outside ourselves for reassurance.

We become skilled at reading the expectations of others while forgetting to ask ourselves one simple question:

What feels true for me?

Over time, approval quietly replaces authenticity.

Although life may appear successful from the outside, something within us begins to feel restless.

We lose confidence in our own voice because we have spent so many years listening to everyone else’s.

Nature Served as My Sanctuary

There wasn’t one dramatic moment that changed everything.

The change came quietly.

As it so often does, I found myself sitting in one of my favourite places—a park which had become my retreat whenever life appeared overwhelming.

I wasn’t searching for answers that day.

I simply needed to breathe.

I sat watching the trees sway calmly in the breeze while birds carried on with their day, totally unaware of the worries I had been carrying for so long.

Nature has always had a way of calming me down.

As the environment around me became quieter, so did my mind.

For the first time in a very long time, I stopped thinking about what everyone else expected of me.

I simply sat.

And during that stillness, I heard something I hadn’t listened to for years.

Myself.

It wasn’t a loud voice.

It didn’t arrive with certainty or dramatic revelation.

It was a calm knowing.

A tone that asked,

“When did you stop trusting yourself?”

I didn’t have an answer.

But I understood I could no longer keep abandoning myself to meet everyone else’s expectations.

That afternoon, nothing around me changed.

But everything in me began to.

Learning to Listen Again

The transformation didn’t happen overnight.

It happened one small decision at a time.

I embraced coaching.

I welcomed therapy.

I filled journals with thoughts I had never tried to say aloud.

I walked in nature for hours.

I learned the gift of becoming still.

Slowly, the quieter my life became, the more clearly, I could hear my own inner voice.

Not the voice of fear.

Not the voice of uncertainty.

Not the opinions of all those around me.

My own.

The more I listened, the more I realised something insightful.

The answers I had devoted years searching for outside myself had been patiently waiting in me all along.

Faith Taught Me What Control Never Could

There have been many moments in my life when I have wanted certainty.

Moments when I wished I could control the outcome.

Times of disappointment, grief and unanswered questions.

Again and again, life reminded me how little control I have.

Eventually I realised something extremely freeing.

The only control I truly possess is how I choose to respond.

That understanding changed everything.

It didn’t remove uncertainty.

It changed my relationship with it.

My faith has carried me through seasons when answers never came.

It has reminded me that trusting life isn’t about knowing exactly where the path leads.

Sometimes it simply means taking the next step anyway.

Even when you cannot yet see the destination.

Why Trusting Yourself Feels Uncomfortable

This is the part people rarely talk about.

Trusting yourself can feel uncomfortable.

Not because it is wrong.

Because it is unfamiliar.

When you have spent years asking everyone else what they think, making your own decisions without asking for reassurance can feel unsettling.

You may question yourself.

You may worry about disappointing people.

You may wonder whether you’re making the right decision.

But discomfort isn’t always a sign to stop.

Sometimes it is simply evidence that you’re growing beyond the version of yourself that depended on outside approval.

Freedom usually feels unfamiliar before it feels natural.

Coming Home to Yourself

Learning to trust yourself again doesn’t mean you’ll never experience fear.

It doesn’t mean you’ll always know the right answer.

It doesn’t mean life suddenly becomes easy.

It means learning to honour your own wisdom with the same respect you’ve spent years giving everyone else’s opinions.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest invitations midlife offers us.

Not to act like someone different.

But to come home to ourselves.

A Kind Invitation

If you’ve spent years searching outside yourself for permission, approval or certainty, I invite you to pause for just a moment.

Ask yourself:

What feels true for me?

What have I been ignoring because I’ve been listening to everyone else?

What would I choose if I completely trusted myself?

You don’t need to have all the answers today.

You don’t need permission to begin.

You don’t need to act as someone else.

Perhaps your next chapter begins simply by trusting yourself enough to take one small step.

Because your inner wisdom has never left you.

It has simply been waiting, patiently and quietly, for you to hear it again.

🌿 Pearl of Wisdom

Whenever life became too loud, I found myself returning to nature.

At first, I thought I was escaping the noise.

Looking back, I realise I was returning to the only place where I could hear myself again.

Perhaps the answers we seek are not found by striving harder, but by becoming still enough to remember what our heart has known all along.

Reflection

Where in your life are you being invited to trust yourself a little more today?

I’d love to hear your reflections in the comments.

And if you’re ready to begin your own journey of rediscovery, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you.

Because true transformation doesn’t begin when we become someone new.

It begins the moment we trust ourselves enough to come home to who we’ve always been.
